Identity, Culture, and Writing: Teaching AP with El Despertar de Gaby
Course Description
This six-week course is designed for Spanish teachers working with students at the Intermediate Mid to High proficiency levels, as defined by ACTFL, who are preparing for or actively engaging with AP-level content.
The course centers around El despertar de Gaby, a novel that incorporates themes of identity, family, social challenges, and adolescence, allowing teachers to create rich, communicative tasks across all AP thematic units.
Throughout the course, participants will explore how to integrate this novel into their teaching practice to promote paragraph-length discourse, cultural analysis, creative writing, and thoughtful classroom discussions, all conducted in Spanish. Teachers will also analyze literary texts and authentic articles that connect with key themes such as self-esteem, the pandemic, social pressure, sexual orientation, and self-discovery, offering an inclusive and relevant approach that reflects the lived experiences of many bilingual and Spanish-speaking students today. Conducted in Spanish.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course, teachers will have a ready-to-use, authentic resource and a complete unit or sequence of lessons based on El despertar de Gaby to implement in their classrooms the following school year.
Analyze the literary, cultural, and emotional themes in El despertar de Gaby
Design AP-aligned instructional units that incorporate El despertar de Gaby as an anchor text, integrating the six AP Spanish Language and Culture thematic units into meaningful, communicative learning experiences.
Develop student-centered tasks that foster paragraph-length discourse through creative writing, interpersonal communication, and presentational speaking—focusing on real-world, emotionally relevant themes found in the novel.
Analyze and integrate authentic resources—such as literary texts, journalistic articles, and multimedia—into lessons that deepen students' understanding of themes like self-esteem, social pressure, and identity in both Hispanic and global contexts.
Facilitate inclusive and empathetic classroom discussions (e.g., Socratic circles) in Spanish that encourage students to reflect on personal values, cultural perspectives, and current issues through the lens of the novel.
Adapt instructional strategies and assessments to meet the linguistic and emotional needs of Intermediate Mid learners, promoting growth toward Intermediate High and AP-level performance across all three communication modes.
Apply the theory of Multiple Intelligences to design inclusive and engaging lessons
